SEEK SHELTER

When the severe weather alarm sounds, proceed to your designated emergency area or the first floor interior hallway or basement in your area rapidly, but do not run. Position yourself on the floor against interior wall, cover your head with arms. If in an unprotected area, crawl under heavy furniture. Outside, get into a ditch or depression, or lie flat on the ground and protect your head. During emergency alerts, DO NOT GO TO gym basketball areas, Natatorium, or any large glassed areas.

Remember that tornado warnings allow only seconds, or a few minutes at best, to seek shelter.

Official Notification Procedures

1. Monday through Friday, 8AM - 5PM, if a tornado warning is put into effect, Emergency Management Office will notify the switchboard via the weather scanner. At that time the telephone calling tree will be activated.

2. Monday through Friday, 8 - 8:30 AM, John Keller will notify faculty in academic buildings if the weather scanner alarm sounds.

3. Monday through Friday, 5PM - 8AM, and on weekends, the residential coordinators on duty will activate the residence life calling tree and call the Academy at 534-6140 (days) or (the Housemothers) 538-4677, 538-4632, and 538-4469 (evenings).

4. Monday through Friday, 5PM - 8AM, and on weekends, the security officer on duty (there is a weather scanner in the security office) will:

A. Activate the on-campus alarm.

B. Proceed to all Academic Areas. Ask the first professor seen in the building to notify all other occupants of the building. (Weekend/Evening Coordinator will send copy of schedule to security office for posting.)

C. When the coordinators receive an all-clear from the weather scanner they will notify the officer who will proceed again to the academic areas to notify the occupants.
