Famous
Alpha Chi's

Involvement on Campus

Alpha Chi Omega was founded nationally on October 15, 1885 at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Our founders - Anna Allen, Olive Burnett, Bertha Deniston, Amy DuBois, Nellie Gamble, Bessie Grooms and Estelle Leonard - were invited by the Dean of the Music School to create a new musical society on campus, but they felt that this would not give them the companionship they needed so decided to found a fraternity instead. These seven young women chose "Alpha", the first letter of the Greek alphabet, because they were forming the first musical fraternity and "Omega", the last letter, because they believed that it would be the last of its kind. After choosing their first eight pledges, the ladies of the Alpha chapter of Alpha Chi Omega made their first appearance in Meharry Hall wearing scarlet red and olive green ribbons attached to their dresses on October 23rd of that year.
